Ransomware and Cryptolocker have had a crippling affect on a lot of companies since 2013, when they first appeared. 

Ransomware is malware, that locks the user’s assets, leaving them in an unusable state.  The compromised user has to pay the attacker with a ransom to unlock the system and to get the files decrypted. Ransomware is still an active threat in 2016. New variants are released frequently, even provided as “ransomware-as-a-service”. 

Last year, 60 % of all companies infected by ransomware had to raise a major incident to solve the case.
